What do you prefer? A Paycheck every single month or a monetary value!

In the first post I wrote  about “amateurs” that produce, share and collaborate because they want to be recognized as experts (help to master and brand). We are all “amateurs”, aren’t we? For this one I would like to go further and ask you: Are we better if we act as amateurs with a monetary value instead of professionals with paychecks?

Well, it depends! As an amateur you think “I am free”! We do not need to do it every single day, nevertheless we do it because we are “in love”. We do it in a passionate, efficient and creative way. We do it without fearing failures, judgments, being misunderstood or even being out of “your scope” (professionally speaking). Why? I am not a psychologist, though I believe that we act like that because we feel safer, in a more protected environment, an environment where we think we are in control therefore, we contribute in a riskier and deeper way. However, this will always depend on us. If we cannot feel free to go deeper, risk more, be more creative and innovate when doing something as an amateur, then probably it does not matter if we are a professional with a paycheck, or an amateur only with his or her passion.

Although, I believe that the right thing to realize is: first, we act differently when being amateurs and not professionals; and second, we are in general better. Relevant question: how can we act as amateurs when being professionals? Dizzy? Don’t be! It is quite simple! How can we full profit from our creativity, risk more and go off our comfort zone when being a professional? Well, probably when we empower ourselves and try not to work with the paycheck in mind. I do not have a solution but I believe that you will have your paycheck if you master what you do and do it in a professional but out-of-the-box way. I know, companies have also to change, yes it is true. However, people should be more entrepreneurial and find a way of be an amateur with a monetary value not a paycheck-oriented.

How do you want to play this new game?

I like to follow trends and novelties, to analyze how people and companies are evolving and doing business! And I must say that too many people is still playing this new game using old rules and practices. Are you assisting the same thing?

We are in the 21st century, where information and technology are key to whatever you do. An era where innovation, creativity and talent (people with talent) are more crucial than ever. Companies in all industries are facing a faster paced economy, the same economy that proved not working efficiently with old models anymore. Where, in my opinion, conservative (traditional) companies should change and become lighter, more flexible and readier for change. Regardless people have already realized  what I have been mentioning, a lot of companies keep stubbornly doing business using old rules, stone-age methods and technologies. Why are they still doing it? This  is really the one-million-dollar question. Well, I believe that they do it for different reasons, but I must be honest and say the one I believe is the worst: people do not want to change! They keep asking: If we have been successful untill now, why shall we change? Why? because the way you do business it is declining, losing competitiveness and spending more than gaining! When do you will change? In the eve of the big lost? When the bottom line is not positive anymore? Well this should be the conversation that one should have with these stubborn people! Because resources are scarce so the better we use them the better the utilization we can get out of them.

The world is changing very fast, the way we should do business must also change. Nowadays, we do not need to have a big  company to reach the market, the market is more global than ever, products/services are marketable easier and needing less cash to happen! Small is real and happening, if you have uniqueness in what you do, authenticity and you are good at doing it please do it! But pay attention to trends and shifts lead and chose instead of being chosen! What is missing to this companies is a new and fresh way of doing business.  Change is not easy but is crucial. To be totally honest here I do not believe in manuals and rules to turnaround or change. Again, we are not anymore in the era of one-size-fits-all today we can choose even if what we chose is in the other side of the world! We are better informed but we haven’t unleashed our non-technical part yet. We have to ask three times before being creative or doing something differently.

Challenge: Let’s try to do something in a different way everyday day!

We are all “amateurs”, aren’t we?

A while ago, I realized that you do not need to be a professional anymore to be able to share your insights and contribute with your knowledge to a pool of content. The World Wide Web enhanced people to become an “amateur” (meaning here someone who does not make a living out of that subject) sharing ideas and collaborating on something bigger than his or her own backyard and garage experiences. What motivated me to write this post were the amazing posts that I have been reading lately and that were written by these so called “amateurs”. I must say that they were amazingly clever, sharing insights and content in an openness that one was not prepared to enjoy for free! I should say that probably the best posts that I have ever read were written by “amateurs”.

What is an “amateur”? For this matter, an “amateur” is someone who produces content out of his or her own expertise gained through a “second life”, a non-professional life, a hobby. Well, if I have to make a bio of them, I should say that they are passionate people, people who like to share what they love most. They spend almost all of their free time investigating, gathering info and data, analyzing and writing about it. The content that they produce is to be shared with their peers (people with the same passion, most of them are not professionals also) to be farther discussed, developed and improved.

Why? Why do they do what they do? In my point of view, for three main reasons. First, for recognition, they want to be recognized as experts in a subject where they are not professionals. Yes, I know, it is a bit cumbersome to understand at first hand! Well, they want to be recognized as “experts” by their peers and readers (virtual readers). Second, for improvement and help on mastering their “art”. If someone out there on the World Wide Web can help with new ideas for them that is great. Last but not least, to brand and to help marketing themselves and their by-product(s). Their expertise can be leveraged in the market and help achieving a better positioning.

Nevertheless the why (I believe is mostly to achieve recognition), this is the twenty first century novelty, at least for the beginning. Everybody can upload or download whatever they want for free, for a fee or just for the cost price of producing it. Not only the content that has a big and well identified demand will be published, the niche stuff can also be shared and read by whoever who wants it. Democratization of content for readers and producers will help humanity evolving in a more diversified way. Ah, by the way the reach is also amazing everybody with an internet connection can easily reach it through the World Wide Web.
